Your First Visit
Your child’s first dental visit is an exciting milestone — and we’re honored to be part of it. At Fairhope Children’s Dentistry, we work hard to make every first visit positive, comfortable, and even fun. Our goal is to help children feel safe in the dental environment while giving parents the information and guidance they need to support healthy smiles at home.
Whether your baby just got their first tooth or your toddler is ready for their very first checkup, our team is here to make the experience smooth and stress-free.
When Should My Child First Visit the Dentist?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends scheduling your child’s first dental visit by age one, or within six months of the first tooth erupting.
Early visits allow us to:
- Monitor growth and development
- Check for early signs of tooth decay
- Provide teething guidance
- Discuss feeding and nutrition habits
- Address thumb-sucking or pacifier use
- Answer any questions you may have
Establishing a dental home early helps build familiarity and comfort, setting the stage for a lifetime of healthy dental habits.
What to Expect at the First Appointment
We understand that new experiences can feel overwhelming — for both children and parents. That’s why we take a gentle, child-led approach.
For infants and toddlers, the visit is typically short, simple, and focused on education. Your child may sit in your lap while we gently examine their teeth and gums. We count teeth, check for healthy development, and look for any early concerns.
For older children, the first visit may include:
- A gentle exam
- A professional cleaning (if appropriate)
- Digital X-rays (only if needed)
- Fluoride treatment (based on age and risk factors)
Most importantly, we introduce your child to our office in a positive way. We explain tools in kid-friendly language and move at a pace that feels comfortable. Our goal is not just healthy teeth — it’s helping your child leave with confidence and a smile.
A dental home is more than just a place for checkups — it’s a trusted relationship. When children feel comfortable at the dentist from an early age, they’re more likely to maintain consistent care and experience less anxiety as they grow.
At Fairhope Children’s Dentistry, we are proud to serve families throughout Fairhope, AL with compassionate, prevention-focused pediatric dental care. From baby teeth to big-kid smiles, we’re here to support your child at every stage.

What Is Considered a Dental Emergency?
It can sometimes be difficult to know whether a situation requires urgent care. In general, you should call us right away if your child experiences:
- Severe tooth pain or persistent discomfort
- A knocked-out permanent tooth
- A cracked, chipped, or broken tooth
- Facial swelling or gum swelling
- Signs of infection (such as fever or abscess)
- Bleeding that does not stop
- Dental trauma from a fall or sports injury
Even if you’re unsure whether the situation is urgent, it’s always better to call. Our team can guide you on the next best steps.
What to Do in Common Dental Emergencies
Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth:
If a permanent tooth is knocked out, time is critical. Gently pick the tooth up by the crown (not the root), rinse it lightly if dirty, and try to place it back in the socket if possible. If that’s not an option, store it in milk and contact our office immediately.
Toothache:
Rinse your child’s mouth with warm water and check for anything lodged between the teeth. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gums. Persistent pain should be evaluated as soon as possible.
Chipped or Broken Tooth:
Save any pieces if you can and rinse the mouth with warm water. Applying a cold compress to the outside of the face can help reduce swelling.
Swelling or Abscess:
Facial swelling or signs of infection require prompt attention. Contact our office right away so we can assess the situation and recommend appropriate care.
Preventing Future Emergencies
While not all emergencies can be avoided, preventative care significantly reduces risk. Regular checkups allow us to identify weakened teeth, untreated cavities, or bite issues that could lead to future problems.
We may also recommend:
- Custom mouthguards for sports
- Sealants to protect molars
- Early treatment for developing concerns
Prevention and preparation go hand in hand when it comes to protecting your child’s smile.
At Fairhope Children’s Dentistry, we are proud to support families throughout Fairhope, AL with responsive, compassionate pediatric dental care — including when the unexpected happens.
If your child is experiencing a dental emergency, don’t wait. Call our office right away so we can help restore comfort and protect their growing smile.
